Cape Charles Summer Sailing Program
Staff Bio - Captain Mac

Captain Mac

Capt. Mac discovered his passion for sailing at the age of 14 when he spent 10 days aboard an 81' schooner.  From that moment on, he expanded his knowledge by spending his summers sailing as much as he could.  By the time he was 19, he became 1st Mate aboard the William H. Albury, an Abaco-built schooner in the Bahamas.  He soon made Captain and spent the majority of his time aboard working with youth sailing expeditions in the Bahamas and the Florida Keys.

Capt. Mac left sailing for a time in order to concentrate on his new family.  He moved to Front Royal, Virginia where he leaned on his outdoor experience to open an Outdoor Outfitting shop with his wife, Wendy.  Wendy and Capt. Mac operated Weasel Creek Outfitters Inc. for almost 10 years.  During this time, Capt. Mac developed a passion for teaching.  When the economy put Weasel Creek Outfitters out of business in 2009, Brandon trained to be a Montessori Adolescent teacher and accepted a job as a farm manager and teacher at a Montessori farm school in Rappahannock County, Virginia.  Eventually Capt. Mac became the lead teacher at an IMC-accredited Montessori Middle School in Norfolk, Virginia, where he still teaches today.

Shortly after his move to Norfolk, Capt. Mac renewed his interest in sailing. He uses his knowledge of the Montessori methodology combined with ecology-based sailing and teaches a variety of programs aboard his boat, Sea Weasel, and for groups from teens to adults.  Capt. Mac combined his love of the outdoors, degree in environmental science, passion for teaching, and sailing experience to develop an ecology-focused watershed program in the Chesapeake Bay and Southern Watersheds.
